Abu T. Serajuddin, Ph.D., is a Professor of Industrial Pharmacy at St. John’s University, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He joined the university in 2008 after a 32-year career in multinational pharmaceutical companies like Novartis and Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he held leadership roles in drug development and technology management. His academic contributions include building the Industrial Pharmacy Innovation Laboratory and pioneering research in drug delivery systems, continuous manufacturing, and 3D printing. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Pharmacy from St. John’s University, an MS in Pharmaceutics from Columbia University, and a B.Pharm. (Honors) from Dhaka University.
Research Interests: Serajuddin’s work focuses on enhancing drug bioavailability through technologies like nanocrystals, co-crystals, lipid-based systems, and melt granulation. He also explores 3D printing for personalized medications and evaluates formulation safety using cell cultures. His lab, the Industrial Pharmacy Innovation Center, collaborates with industry partners to advance pharmaceutical innovation.
Awards & Grants: Recipient of the St. John’s University Medal for Outstanding Achievement (2019), IPEC Ralph Shangraw Memorial Award (2016), and multiple AAPS awards. His research has been supported by $1.85M from industry and university grants, including a National Science Foundation IUCRC planning grant (2018–19) for the CIMSEPP Center.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Serajuddin Research Lab, part of the Industrial Pharmacy program. Collaborates across disciplines within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and with the university’s Innovation and Incubation Center.
