Abraham Openy is a medical doctor, public health researcher, and doctoral candidate at the Centre for Environmental and Respiratory Health Research (CERH), Faculty of Medicine, University of Oulu. His work focuses on the intersection of climate change, air pollution, and respiratory health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa, supported by the Finnish government's Planetary Health and Sustainability Transformations (SusTra) program.
- Educated with an MD and MPH
- Completed Master’s research fellowship at the Institute of Tropical Medicine–Antwerp (ITM)
- Trained at Columbia University, ASPHER, and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
Research Interests include:
- Environmental determinants of health in LMICs
- Health impacts of ambient and household air pollution
- Climate change and global health security
- Sustainability frameworks for health programs in resource-limited settings
His doctoral project employs geospatial and epidemiological analysis of Demographic Health Survey (DHS) and satellite data to explore respiratory health effects of air pollution. He contributes to global public health networks and has engaged in high-level policy forums such as the 140th WHO Executive Board Meeting.
