Abraham Bernstein

Professor Abraham Bernstein serves as a faculty member in the Department of Informatics at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where he directs the UZH Digital Society Initiative—a university-wide research and teaching consortium encompassing over 170 faculty members focused on digitalization's societal impacts.

His research integrates technical and social science methodologies across Semantic Web, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Collective Intelligence. Bernstein's work emphasizes large-scale digital participation systems, particularly in political contexts, bridging algorithmic innovation with democratic theory.

Bernstein maintains active international collaborations, including a six-month residency at the CIRES Centre (December 2022–May 2023) with Associate Professor Gianluca Demartini on the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded project Large-Scale Political Participation: Issue Identification, Deliberation, and Co-creation. He returned for a follow-up visit in April 2025 prior to the ACM Web Conference, demonstrating ongoing engagement in global AI governance research.
