Dr. Avan's research centers on neuroepidemiology and brain health, with particular emphasis on the global burden of neurological disorders including dementia, stroke, and ischemic heart disease. His work investigates modifiable risk factors and prevention strategies, spanning from Wilson's disease to socioeconomic and environmental determinants. He has contributed significantly to the Global Burden of Disease Study, especially in North Africa and the Middle East, and advocates for evidence-based interventions to improve brain health across the lifespan.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a focus on quantifying the burden of neurological disorders and developing practical frameworks for brain health measurement. He has led studies on secular trends showing decreasing incidence of stroke and dementia in some regions, highlighting prevention opportunities through risk factor modification.
As a member of the American Academy of Neurology and active participant in international health initiatives, Dr. Avan bridges research with policy to promote brain health globally. His current work within Western University's Dementia Prevention Initiative explores modifiable risk factors and evidence-based interventions for cognitive decline.
