Abigail Stephan is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at Clemson University, with affiliated appointments at the Institute for Engaged Aging. She holds a Ph.D. in Learning Sciences with a concentration in Human Development Across the Lifespan (2022) and a B.A. in Language and International Trade (2017), both from Clemson University.
Her research explores intergenerational relationships across family, community, and educational contexts, examining their impact on learning, development, and well-being throughout the lifespan. She investigates social and psychological factors that promote healthy aging, employing mixed methods approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives spanning gerontology, family science, developmental psychology, and education.
Dr. Stephan's recent publications focus on cognitive aging interventions, grandfamily dynamics during crises, intergenerational learning methodologies, and novel approaches to gerontology education. Her work consistently demonstrates translational value for improving health equity across generations.
She has received several scientific awards including:
- Faculty Scholar with Clemson University School of Health Research (2024-Present)
- College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences Research Development Award (2023)
- National Council on Family Relations Research and Theory Section Spotlight (2023)
Dr. Stephan actively mentors graduate students in psychology and education and leads research teams at the Study of Healthy Aging and Applied Research Programs (SHAARP) Lab and Contexts of Learning and Development (CLAD) Lab. She serves as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded projects investigating Alzheimer's disease in rural communities and cognitive decline detection technologies.
