She examines how societal constructs of crime, deviance, and social problems evolve over time and how these classifications reflect and reinforce power structures. Her work bridges sociology and criminology with particular attention to race, gender, and legal discourse.
Her teaching approach emphasizes critical analysis of how phenomena become categorized as criminal or deviant, encouraging students to question who defines these categories and with what consequences. She incorporates contemporary media and news sources to develop students' analytical skills across various information formats.
