Abigail Mackey is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. Her research focuses on skeletal muscle physiology, regeneration after traumatic soft-tissue injury, muscle fibre denervation, and the myotendinous junction. She leads a research group investigating how physical function components are affected by injury and ageing, and how physical activity can mitigate decline.

She employs human experimental approaches to study ageing, exercise interventions, and traumatic injury mechanisms. Current work explores how muscle fibroblasts and stem cells interact with motor neurons in age-dependent ways, and investigates structural adaptations at the myotendinous junction.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals strong focus on muscle-tendon interface biology, cellular mechanisms of regeneration, and translational applications for ageing populations. Key themes include fibre type specialization, spatial organization of cellular components, and exercise-induced adaptations in elderly individuals.
