Professor Abigail Elizur is a leading academic and researcher in Aquaculture Biotechnology at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), where she holds the title of Professor in Aquaculture Biotechnology and serves as Co-Director of the Centre for Bioinnovation. She has a PhD from the Australian National University (ANU), an MSc from ANU, and a BSc in Hebrew Studies, complemented by Fellow status in the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).
Her research focuses on reproductive biology, genomics, and biotechnological innovations for aquaculture species. Key areas include reproductive endocrinology in fish, genomic tools for aquaculture improvement, and stress responses in marine organisms like pearl oysters and sea cucumbers. She has secured major grants for projects such as understanding skeletal deformities in salmonids and genomic sequencing of silverlip pearl oysters.
Professor Elizur has been recognized with awards including the UniSC Medal for Outstanding Research (2009) and the Award for Excellence in Research (2016). She supervises doctoral and master’s students in aquaculture-related disciplines, contributing to over 200 publications and pioneering technologies like chloroplast expression systems and surrogate broodstock development.
Her work integrates molecular biology with practical aquaculture challenges, aiming to enhance sustainable production and conservation of marine species. The Centre for Bioinnovation under her co-direction fosters interdisciplinary research in biotechnology, genetics, and environmental resilience.
