Dr. Abdulkarim Ekzayez is a Senior Research Associate and Research Fellow at King's College London, where he serves as a Health System Expert at the Centre for Conflict and Health Research within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy and School of Security Studies. He is currently a Co-Investigator for the NIHR-funded Research for Health System Strengthening in Northern Syria (R4HSSS) project and serves as Primary Investigator for a WHO-funded project implementing a customized 'Harmonized Health Facility Assessment'.
His academic background includes an MD from Aleppo University (2010), an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2017), and a PhD in Health Systems and Conflict from King's College London (2023). His doctoral research focused on 'Health system strengthening in conflict settings: a case study of a hybrid health system in northwest Syria between 2013-2021'.
Dr. Ekzayez specializes in Health Systems Strengthening in conflict settings, with research focusing on violence against healthcare in conflict zones, health governance, research capacity strengthening, and humanitarian response systems. His work bridges public health, security studies, and political governance in fragile states. His research demonstrates a consistent focus on practical applications of health system interventions in war-torn regions, particularly Syria, with increasing attention to pandemic response in conflict zones and cross-border healthcare strategies.
His scholarly contributions include over 30 academic journal articles and four book chapters, with recent publications (2022-2024) showing increased focus on practical implementation strategies, medical education rebuilding in conflict zones, and intersection of pandemic response with ongoing conflict. His work consistently addresses the Syrian context while drawing broader implications for global health in fragile settings.

His unique perspective combines clinical experience in neurosurgery (gained during medical training 2010-2013) with direct experience providing war-related trauma care in Northwest Syria field hospitals after quitting his medical training in 2013 to work in conflict zones.
His research program operates at the intersection of global health, security, and political governance in conflict-affected regions, with strong emphasis on practical health system interventions and capacity building in the Syrian context.
