Abby Snyder is an Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). Her research focuses on microbial food safety and spoilage, addressing cross-contamination mitigation and microbial extremotolerance. She holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University (2017) and a B.S. from The Ohio State University (2012).
Her lab investigates microbial survival mechanisms in extreme environments, pathogen persistence in low-moisture foods, and biofilm-related contamination risks. Current work includes developing superheated steam sterilization methods and genomic tools for spoilage prediction.
Dr. Snyder teaches Food Safety Assurance (FDSC 3960/5960) and contributes to graduate seminars. Her lab has secured a $4.2M grant (2023) supporting climate-related agricultural research and has published extensively on microbial control strategies. She advises doctoral students in food microbiology and collaborates with industry partners to enhance food processing sustainability.
