Abby Barras is a Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Brighton, affiliated with the Centre for Transforming Sexuality and Gender. Her research focuses on transgender and non-binary inclusion in sport and physical activity, embodiment studies, LGBTQ+ youth, and qualitative research methods. She holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Brighton (2021) and an MA in Gender Studies from the University of Sussex (2016).
Her work bridges critical psychology and sociology, emphasizing participatory and creative methodologies. Recent projects include co-leading a UKRI-funded study on creativity, community, and resilience (2024–2026) and supervising PhD candidates researching gender creative parenting and GRT community heritage visibility. She received the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2023/24, recognizing her innovative teaching practices rooted in accessibility and engaged pedagogy.
