Abbe Crawford is a Lecturer in Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), part of the Department of Clinical Science and Services at the Camden campus. She works within the Brain Health and Behaviour research group and the CPCS Research Programme, with clinical responsibilities in Small Animal Neurology.
Dr. Crawford's research focuses on neurological conditions in companion animals with particular emphasis on:
- Therapeutic applications of exogenous mitochondria for hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury
- Investigating the brain phenotype of muscular dystrophy and dystrophin expression in the canine brain
- Functional consequences of dystrophin deficiency using EEG analysis and cognitive testing
- Management of the RVC's Companion Animal Brain Bank
Her publication record spans from 2006 to 2024, showing an evolution from orthopedic conditions to specialized veterinary neurology and neuroscience research. Recent publications focus on oligodendrocyte development, spinal surgery techniques for companion animals, and neurological disorders in cats and dogs.
Dr. Crawford obtained the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Neurology in 2018, demonstrating her expertise in this specialized field. Her work bridges veterinary and human medicine, particularly in muscular dystrophy research where findings in canine models have implications for human patients.
She manages the RVC's Companion Animal Brain Bank, which collects brain tissue and biological fluids from animals euthanized due to neurological disease, creating a valuable resource for researchers studying neurological conditions. This initiative addresses the underutilized research potential of brain tissue that would otherwise be communally cremated without confirmed diagnosis.
