Dr. Aashish Velkar is a Senior Lecturer in Economic History at the University of Manchester, within the Department of History, School of Arts, Languages and Cultures. He has held roles such as Director of Teaching, Learning, and Student Experience (2020–22) and Associate Director for Assessments (2019–21). His research focuses on economic institutions, political economy, and the cultural foundations of economic practices, with particular emphasis on British and Indian colonial contexts. Velkar contributes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal on Education through his academic work.
Velkar holds a PhD in Economic History from the London School of Economics (2009), an MSc from LSE (2003), and an MBA from the University of Pune (1991). He has been at the University of Manchester since 2012 after completing his doctoral training.
His research interests include Economic History, Business History, and the History of Modern Britain and India. Current projects explore the history of Cost of Living measurements in Britain, colonial economic spaces, and the role of measurements in economic governance. His monograph Markets and Measurements in Nineteenth-Century Britain (CUP, 2012) investigates measurement standards and their impact on markets and institutions.
Awarded notable prizes including the Outstanding Author Contribution Award (2019), Philip Sranton Best Article Prize (2018), and Thirsk-Feinstein PhD Dissertation Prize (2010), Velkar’s work has been widely recognized. He also received the Coleman Prize for Best PhD Dissertation in Business History (2010) and the Economic History Society Postan Fellowship (2008).
Velkar is currently open to supervising PhD students in his areas of research. While specific grants are not detailed here, his work has been supported through institutional and scholarly engagements.
