Aarzoo Singh is an Assistant Professor (teaching stream) at the University of Toronto Scarborough's Department of Historical and Cultural Studies. Her academic journey includes an MA in Gender Studies from Queen's University (2014) and a PhD in Women and Gender Studies from the University of Toronto. Her research explores theoretical and experiential connections between objects, displacement, and memory within the South Asian Diaspora, employing postcolonial, affect, and object theories. She emphasizes 'affective objects'—heirlooms, artifacts, and sites—as sites of intergenerational knowledge and narrative-making for marginalized communities.
Education:
- PhD, Women and Gender Studies Institute, University of Toronto
- MA, Gender Studies, Queen's University (2014)
Research focuses on how material objects mediate migratory cultures, home politics, and silenced histories. Her doctoral work analyzed personal archives as alternative epistemological sites, arguing that affective objects create spaces for unheard narratives of displacement. She draws inspiration from her mentor Dr. Katherine McKittrick, integrating theory and pedagogy rooted in narrative and creative interdisciplinary approaches.
