Aaron Schutz

Aaron Schutz is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Educational Policy and Community Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he also directs the Community Engagement and Education Program and Cultural Foundations of Community Engagement and Education Program. His work bridges academic theory and practical community action in urban settings.

His research centers on community engagement for social change in urban communities and theories of democracy and democratic education. Schutz has collaborated with Milwaukee community groups for over a decade, including spearheading efforts to fund school nurses in all Milwaukee Public Schools and directing student social action projects at an inner-city high school. His theoretical work critically examines postmodernism, American pragmatism (particularly John Dewey), and Hannah Arendt's political philosophy in relation to empowerment, agency, and social class dynamics.
