Moreno's research examines ethnic and religious identification in post-conquest societies, analyzing how communal identity was shaped by indigenous status rather than linguistic or liturgical practices. His monograph-in-progress, Professionally Indigenous Christians: The Mozarab and Greek Elite of Toledo and Messina (1100–1350), uses comparative methods to challenge linear narratives of assimilation.
His publications include studies on anthroponymy and autography in multilingual environments, Mozarab identification, and liturgical continuities. He has presented at conferences for the American Historical Association, Medieval Academy, and Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies, with fieldwork conducted in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Moreno also directs the International and Global Studies Program, organizing events on global issues and careers.
