AJ Sumell is a Professor of Economics at the Lariccia School of Accounting & Finance, Youngstown State University (YSU). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Georgia State University, specializing in Urban Economics. His teaching portfolio spans undergraduate and graduate courses in Microeconomic Theory, Urban Economics, Sports Economics, and Environmental Economics. Research interests include Urban and Regional Economics, Housing Economics, Economics Education, and Public Policy.
Dr. Sumell has been recognized with YSU's Distinguished Professorship Award for Teaching (2011) and Service (2017 and 2022). He actively serves on the Board of Directors for CASTLO Community Improvement Corporation and Thrive Mahoning Valley. His research has been published in journals such as Economies, Journal of Economic Education, and Housing Studies, addressing topics ranging from drug overdose epidemics to mindfulness in education. He has also engaged with over 80 media outlets and presented at 25+ academic events.
Key research themes include the intersection of public policy and urban development, the impact of shale gas extraction on housing markets, and innovative teaching methodologies in economics.
