Prof. A.R. (Tony) Absalom is a Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences, within the Department of Critical Care, Anesthesiology, Peri-operative and Emergency Medicine. His research focuses on anesthesiology, pharmacology, and neurosciences, with a particular emphasis on pharmacokinetics, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, and anesthesia-related complications. He has held roles as a Trustee of the British Journal of Anaesthesia and a Scientific Program Advisor for the Society for Intravenous Anaesthesia.
Prof. Absalom's work spans clinical and translational research, including studies on sedation protocols, intraoperative monitoring, and the impact of anesthesia on brain health. His recent publications address topics like inter-rater disagreement in ICU sleep scoring, pharmacokinetic changes in older adults, and the association between intraoperative intestinal integrity and postoperative complications in cancer patients.
He has received notable awards such as the Mushin Medal Oration and Honorary Life Membership of SIVA UK.
