Dr. A. Timothy Royappa is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of West Florida, part of the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1992) and a B.S. in Chemistry from Indiana University (1985, with highest distinction). He is a distinguished educator, inducted into the UWF Distinguished Teaching Hall of Fame after winning the UWF Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Advising six times.
His research spans three major areas: copper(I) complexes for microelectronics and pharmaceutical applications, hyperbranched polymers such as polyglycidol, and multivariable data fitting in chemical systems. His work combines synthesis, structural characterization via X-ray crystallography, and practical applications in nanotechnology and materials science.
The 15 most recent publications reflect a strong trend in inorganic synthesis, particularly of copper(I) species, with frequent use of crystallographic analysis. There is also a parallel focus on polymer chemistry, especially functionalization of hyperbranched polyethers for biomedical applications, and mathematical modeling of chemical data. Collaborations with institutions such as UCSD and CEA-Saclay are evident.

Dr. Royappa has served as a scientific consultant to several companies and the Florida Department of Education. He has mentored undergraduate researchers and led projects involving chemical vapor deposition, nanoparticle synthesis, and polymer bioconjugates. His lab has produced significant work in coordination chemistry and materials development. He maintains active research in both inorganic and polymer chemistry, with ongoing publications and collaborations.
His research group focuses on synthesizing novel copper(I) oxalate complexes for semiconductor applications, developing biocompatible hyperbranched polymers, and creating mathematical models for diatomic potentials and industrial processes. The team includes undergraduate researchers and benefits from strong external collaborations.
