Özlem Atar serves as an Assistant Professor (Term Adjunct) and Graduate Assistant in the Department of Gender Studies at Queen's University, where she acts as the primary contact for graduate students and facilitates communications between the department, university, and students.
She holds dual PhDs in Communication Sciences and Cultural Studies, informing her interdisciplinary academic foundation. Her research centers on intercultural communication theory, focusing on marginalized individuals' negotiations of cultural and national belonging through border-crossing narratives in women's, children's, and elder literature. She actively explores intersections between migrant justice activism, socially committed literature, and creative industries, inspired by works like Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes".
In her administrative capacity, Atar manages graduate admissions processes, designs departmental newsletters and promotional materials, and supports current and prospective Gender Studies students through dedicated communication channels.
