Şefik DURSUN

Prof. Dr. Şefik DURSUN is currently serving as Advisor to the Rector at Uskudar University, while maintaining his position as Head of the Department of Biophysics in the Faculty of Medicine since 2019. He has been affiliated with Istanbul University since 1970, where he earned his Licence (1970), Doctorate (1981), Associate Professorship (1987), and Professorship (1993) in Biophysics.

His research focuses on biophysics, particularly examining the roles of trace elements (zinc, selenium, copper) in modulating oxidative stress, hypoxia, and TRPM2 channel dynamics in cellular models like HEK293 cells. His work explores protective mechanisms against hypoxia/hypercapnia-induced cellular damage and metal ion homeostasis in diabetic and renal pathologies.

Recent publications (2018-2022) highlight his expertise in cellular neuroscience, ion channel regulation, and environmental stress adaptation. He has presented at international conferences such as the 7th World Congress on Oxidative Stress and TRP Channels (2018).
