Dr. Áine Travers is an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology at Dublin City University (DCU), affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Health. Her research focuses on psychological trauma, violence prevention, global mental health, and social justice, with a particular emphasis on LGBTQ+ communities and humanitarian contexts. She leads the Wellcome Trust-funded ECHO Project, examining intimate partner violence in LGBTQ+ populations in Ireland and the UK, and a Research Ireland project on sexual violence and help-seeking in LGBTQ+ communities. Previously, she conducted research on conflict-related gender violence in Uganda and developed trauma-informed mental health models with the International Federation of Red Cross.
Dr. Travers holds a Marie Skłodowska-Curie PhD from DCU (2020), an MA in Human Rights from the European Inter-University Centre in Venice, and a BA in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin. She is a member of the All-Ireland Network on Sexual Violence Research, the DCU Institute for Research on Genders and Sexualities, and serves on the board of the Irish Family Planning Association.
Her work bridges academia and activism, addressing gender equality, sexual violence prevention, and mental health through interdisciplinary and participatory approaches. Notable collaborations include partnerships with Makerere University (Uganda) and the IFRC, advancing gender transformative humanitarian programming and trauma-informed support systems.
