Talmage D. Egan, MD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, with a joint appointment as Adjunct Professor of Neurosurgery. He directs clinical practice in neuroanesthesia and obstetric anesthesia at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Previously, he served as Chief of Neuroanesthesia and President of the Medical Staff. Education : B.A. in Humanities (Magna Cum Laude) from Brigham Young University M.D. from the University of Utah School of Medicine (AΩA honor society) Residency in Surgery and Anesthesiology at the University of Utah and Stanford University Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at Stanford Physician Executive Training at Harvard School of Public Health Research Focus : Dr. Egan pioneers studies in intravenous anesthetic pharmacology, including pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling of sedatives/analgesics, novel drug delivery systems, and optimization of total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). His work on remifentanil-propofol interactions and propofol formulations has influenced global anesthesia protocols. He holds patents for drug delivery technologies and founded the Safe Sedation Training platform. Publications : His 200+ articles emphasize anesthetic pharmacology, drug interactions, and monitoring technologies. Recent works explore opioid alternatives, respiratory monitoring algorithms, and obesity-adjusted pharmacokinetic models, reflecting a consistent focus on precision anesthesia and patient safety.
