Erin Schuman is a distinguished neuroscientist holding multiple prominent academic positions: Professor of Synaptic Functions and Plasticity at Radboud Universiteit (2021-present), Professor for Neuronal Synaptic Dynamics at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University (2015-present), and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt (2009-present). Previously, she spent 16 years at California Institute of Technology, rising from Assistant Professor (1993) to full Professor (2004-2010), while simultaneously serving as an HHMI Investigator (1997-2009). Her educational background includes a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Southern California (1985), a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Princeton University (1990), and postdoctoral training in Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Stanford University. Her laboratory pioneered techniques for visualizing local protein synthesis in neurons and demonstrated its critical role in synaptic plasticity.
