Professor
Costas Canakis is a Professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of the Aegean's Department of Social Anthropology and History. He directs the Laboratory for Ethnographic Studies on Language (LESoL) and the MA program in Gender, Culture, and Society. With a BA from the University of Athens (1990) and a PhD from the University of Chicago (1995), his career spans teaching at Princeton University and Greek institutions. His research focuses on sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and Balkan linguistic landscapes, particularly language's role in gender, sexuality, and national identity. Notable projects include DFG-funded studies on precarious citizenship in Athens/Belgrade and collaborative work with the Centre for Greek Language since 1999. His recent work explores chronotopic indexing in Mytilene's pandemic-era linguistic landscape and contested urban spaces in Athens/Belgrade. Grants include participation in the (In)FERCIT Excellence Program (2012-2015) and a Humboldt-Universität DFG grant (2015-2016). Teaching includes undergraduate courses on language and society, discourse analysis, and graduate seminars on gender/sexuality linguistics. He collaborates internationally, serving on editorial boards and lecturing globally.
