Anthony Wagner is the Lucie Stern Professor in the Social Sciences within the Department of Psychology at Stanford University. He earned his PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from Stanford in 1997. His research investigates cognitive processes including memory formation, attention, aging, and decision-making using neuroimaging techniques. Primary research domains include: Neural mechanisms of episodic memory and learning Neurocognitive aging and Alzheimer's pathology Brain network dynamics during self-referential processing Effects of digital media on attentional systems Publications demonstrate strong emphasis on neurodegenerative biomarkers (tau, amyloid), neuroimaging innovations (PET/MRI), and cognitive aging. Recent work integrates molecular neuroscience with clinical applications for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diagnostics. He directs the Stanford Memory Laboratory, exploring hippocampal-prefrontal interactions during memory retrieval and spatial navigation. Research has examined stress impacts on memory, neural pattern classification, and media multitasking effects on cognition.
