Associate Professor
John D. Young is an Associate Professor of History and Director of Undergraduate Research at Flagler College, part of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences within the Humanities Department. He holds a Doctorate and Master's in Medieval Studies from the University of Notre Dame, a Diploma in Jewish Studies from Oxford University, and a Bachelor's in History from Brigham Young University. His research focuses on the intersections of culture, politics, and economics in the high Middle Ages, particularly monasticism and Jewish-Christian relations, with secondary interests in Mormon Studies and African history. Professor Young teaches over 30 courses spanning European and African history, including specialized topics like Medieval Minorities, African Intellectual History, and The Crusades. He has held visiting professorships at the University of Würzburg (2015, 2018) and a fellowship at the Forschungsstelle für vergleichende Ordengeschichte in Dresden. Notable awards include the Kenan Distinguished Associate Professor title (2018-21). His publications include co-edited volumes such as Preaching and New Worlds (Routledge, 2018) and Standing Apart (Oxford, 2014), alongside journal articles analyzing medieval monastic sermons and Jewish-Christian interactions. Recent presentations address topics like monastic exempla and interreligious monastic dynamics. Teaching contributions include co-authoring This Small Spot , a world civilizations textbook, and directing Flagler's undergraduate research initiatives. His work frequently bridges historical analysis with contemporary pedagogical practices, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to medieval and religious studies.
