Stefan Swartling Peterson is a Professor of Global Transformation for Health at Karolinska Institutet (KI), Sweden, with a side affiliation to Makerere University, Uganda. He holds a medical degree from Uppsala University, a Master of Public Health from Harvard University, a PhD from Uppsala University, and a postdoc from KI and Makerere. His academic career includes serving as UNICEF's Global Chief of Health (2016–2020). His research focuses on implementation science, child survival, maternal and newborn health, and addressing social determinants of health. Key interests include global health equity, health systems strengthening, and leveraging evidence-based practices in low-resource settings. Notable contributions include studies on integrated community case management (iCCM), oxygen access in low-resource regions, and diabetes management in Uganda/South Africa. His work bridges research and policy, emphasizing scalable solutions for global health challenges. He has received awards such as Uppsala University's Alumnus of the Year (2012) and Honorary Membership in Västgöta Nation (2015). Current initiatives include advancing sustainable health programs and collaborating with global partners to improve healthcare access and quality.
