Dr. Abed Alaswad is a Senior Lecturer and Reader in Mechanical Engineering at Aston University's College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, leading the Engineering for Sustainable Development Research Centre. He specializes in sustainable energy systems modeling, fuel cell technology, and waste-to-energy solutions. Alaswad holds a PhD from Dublin City University and has held academic roles at multiple UK institutions before joining Aston in 2018. His research focuses on renewable energy integration, energy system optimization, and sustainable development in global contexts. Alaswad has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and secured £4m+ in research funding from EPSRC, Innovate UK, and international bodies. Notable projects include the £2.93m West Midlands Business Energy Advice Service and a Royal Academy of Engineering-funded hydrogen-based green engine project. Alaswad serves on the editorial board of Science of the Total Environment and is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He pioneered CDIO educational frameworks and led the Birmingham City Engineering Festival. His work bridges academia and industry, addressing energy efficiency for manufacturing sectors and developing nations. Key grants include £1.3m for Malawi's solar irrigation systems, £300k for hybrid energy-powered irrigation, and £280k for off-grid cold storage in Ethiopia. He has supervised four PhD students and collaborates globally on initiatives in Jordan, Thailand, the Philippines, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
