Professor Paul Russell is a coastal dynamics expert at the University of Plymouth's School of Biological and Marine Sciences (Faculty of Science and Engineering). He has held academic roles since 1992, including Professor of Coastal Dynamics since 2009 (0.4 FTE). His research focuses on coastal processes, sediment transport, extreme storm impacts, and climate change adaptation. He has supervised over 20 PhD students and led major projects like the NERC BLUE-coast grant and EPSRC NUPSIG grant. Teaching includes modules on coastal geomorphology, management, and erosion protection. Notable contributions include field experiments on swash dynamics, rip currents, and gravel beach morphodynamics. His work spans global collaborations (e.g., CONACYT-funded projects in Mexico) and integrates remote sensing techniques for coastal monitoring. Key research topics include shoreline modeling, infragravity wave impacts, and the role of climate variability in coastal evolution. He has advised on marine renewable energy impacts and public safety through beach hazard assessments. Over 200+ peer-reviewed articles highlight his expertise in both theoretical and applied coastal science.
