Associate Professor
James Johnson is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan campus), affiliated with the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of Economics, Philosophy and Political Science. His research focuses on labour economics and the economics of education, with additional interests in industrial relations and discrimination studies. Prior to UBC, he held academic appointments at Wilfrid Laurier University, McMaster University, and the University of Saskatchewan. Education: PhD in Economics from McMaster University His teaching emphasizes empirical research methods and has contributed to textbooks such as Research Now: Contemporary Writing in the Disciplines (2018). Professional service roles include leadership in the Confederation of Faculty Associations of British Columbia, UBCFA Executive Committee, and Okanagan Senate. He is also a chief negotiator for the UBCFA bargaining team. Johnson’s research spans topics such as ageism, wage flexibility, and regional unemployment dynamics. His publications include studies on undergraduate attitudes toward aging, Canadian provincial economic policies, and interdisciplinary research methodologies. He actively contributes to academic policy committees and institutional governance at UBC, balancing scholarly work with institutional service.
