Associate Professor
Abi Santhakumar is an Associate Professor of Haematology and serves as Associate Head of School for Research & Graduate Studies and for Medical Science & Pathology at Charles Sturt University. Their research focuses on the role of dietary bioactive compounds, particularly polyphenols and antioxidants, in modulating risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, with a special emphasis on haemostasis and platelet activity under oxidative stress. They also investigate pre-analytical errors in pathology laboratories to improve diagnostic quality. PhD in Haematology, Griffith University (2014) Their research interests lie at the intersection of nutrition, medical science, and clinical pathology, especially exploring how dietary antioxidants can prevent thrombosis. Key areas include polyphenol characterization, oxidative stress modulation, and improving laboratory diagnostics. Their work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals in health and education. The recent publications show a strong trend in clinical haematology, diagnostic improvement, and nutritional interventions, with increasing focus on pre-analytical processes and thrombin generation assays. There is a clear interdisciplinary approach combining food science, pathology, and public health. Excellence Awards - Successful Graduates (2019) Executive Deans Teaching Award (2023) Graham Centre Cat 1 teaching support (2019) Graham Centre Conference support scheme (2019) Continuing professional development in higher education (2021, Grant) Abi Santhakumar is a registered supervisor and has mentored students in haematology, nutrition, and medical science. They have secured competitive grants and are actively involved in academic leadership and curriculum development. Their collaborative work includes partnerships with national and international institutions in haemostasis research and laboratory medicine. They are actively engaged in professional networks, particularly through the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS), where they serve as Director and organize seminar series on haemostasis and laboratory harmonization, contributing to national standards in medical science.
