Associate Professor
Sanjay Mohanty is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research focuses on innovative solutions for water sustainability, including stormwater biofilters, wildfire-impacted water systems, and biosolids management. As an IoES Faculty Advisor, he mentors graduate students like Irena Pavlovic in advancing environmental science applications. Current position: Associate Professor, UCLA Key research: Stormwater treatment, wildfire hydrology, microplastics Email: mohanty@ucla.edu His work addresses critical environmental challenges through material science and hydrological modeling. Recent projects include The Wildfire-Stormwater Nexus , examining post-wildfire water quality impacts. Mohanty's publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches combining civil engineering, environmental chemistry, and public health. Scientific awards include the Pritzker Emerging Environmental Genius Award , recognizing his innovative contributions. Mohanty's research spans biosolids analysis, PFAS remediation, and biochar applications, with a strong emphasis on field-based validation and scalable solutions. His laboratory investigates the transport of contaminants in urban watersheds, focusing on microplastics, engineered particles, and pathogens. Collaborative efforts with IoES and the UCLA Water Resources Group demonstrate his commitment to integrated environmental management systems.
