Senior Lecturer
Frances Devine is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Hospitality Tourism & Events Management at Ulster University Business School, Belfast campus. She serves as Course Director for the MSc International Event Management program and has been in academia for over 19 years. Her professional journey began with Compass Group/Catering as a catering manager throughout Northern Ireland from 1993-1997 before joining Ulster University in 2001 from the Northern Ireland Hotel and Catering College, Portrush. Dr. Devine holds a BA (Hons) in Hotel and Tourism Management from Magee (1992), an MA in International Tourism Management from Ulster University (2000), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Further and Higher Education (2009). She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the University's Centre for Higher Education and Research Practice. In 2016, she achieved the Institute of Leadership and Management qualification (ILM). Her research primarily focuses on cultural diversity training in the hospitality and tourism sector, with particular emphasis on virtual event experiences and how cultural events can bridge social divides in post-conflict societies. Dr. Devine has published over 20 articles in professional and academic journals, with recent work examining the virtual event experience on platforms like Zwift and the role of cultural events in peacebuilding in divided cities like Belfast. Her research spans event management, tourism policy, and the intersection of technology with traditional event experiences. Dr. Devine has received significant recognition for her scholarly contributions, including the Cutting Edge Research Award (Gold) in 2023, an Emerald Literati Award for Excellence (Highly Commended) in 2008, and the Best Tourism Paper award in 2005. She serves as an academic reviewer for prestigious international journals including the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. Professionally, Dr. Devine has served as an external examiner at institutions including the University of Wales Institute Cardiff and the International University College in Bulgaria. She maintains strong industry connections with the Hastings Hotel Group in Northern Ireland, where she contributes to their Management Ambassador Programme as part of the Certificate of Personal & Professional Development framework. Her work exemplifies the integration of academic rigor with practical industry application in the dynamic field of event and tourism management.
