Professor
Joerg Tremmel is an Extraordinary Professor at Eberhard Karls University Tuebingen, affiliated with the Department of Social Sciences within the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. He holds two PhDs (in Philosophy and Social Sciences) and has established himself as a leading scholar in political theory, particularly focusing on intergenerational justice, climate ethics, and democratic theory. His research centers on the structural challenges democracies face in addressing long-term issues, particularly the 'tyranny of the present' that disadvantages future generations. Tremmel's most significant contribution is the 'four-branches-of-government model,' which proposes adding a 'future branch' to represent future citizens' interests. His work bridges political philosophy and practical policy, examining how democratic institutions can better incorporate future considerations into decision-making processes. Tremmel's recent publications (2020-2024) demonstrate a consistent focus on intergenerational justice in various contexts including climate change, pandemics, constitutional design, and democratic reform. His scholarship shows an evolution from theoretical foundations toward increasingly applied work addressing contemporary challenges like the Anthropocene transition and climate justice.
