Dr. Alicja Bonk is a Researcher at the University of Gdańsk, affiliated with the Institute of Geography and the Department of Geomorphology and Quaternary Geology. Her work focuses on high-resolution paleoenvironmental reconstructions using varved lake sediments to understand long-term climate and human impacts in northern and central Poland. Her research interests include marine geology, limnology, climate change, eutrophication, fire history, and Quaternary environmental transformations. She investigates processes such as varve formation, sediment chronology, and anthropogenic vs. natural environmental changes over the last 2000 years. Her expertise spans geochemistry, sedimentology, and paleoclimatology. The recent publications highlight a strong focus on varved sediments from lakes in Poland (e.g., Lake Gorzyńskie, Lubińskie, Żabińskie, Jaczno) as high-resolution archives of environmental change. Themes include fire-climate-human interactions, eutrophication, sediment fluxes, and methodological challenges in geochemical analysis. Her work bridges paleoecology and modern ecology, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and data integration. ORCID: 0000-0001-9863-9408 Google Scholar: Profile ResearchGate: Profile Dr. Bonk has been actively involved in major research initiatives, including the PAGES Early-Career Network, and has collaborated extensively with institutions such as the Polish Academy of Sciences and international research groups. She previously held a PostDoc position (2017–2019) and completed her PhD at the University of Gdańsk. She contributes to advancing methodological rigor in ²¹⁰Pb and ¹⁴C dating calibration using varve chronologies. She is part of a dynamic research team conducting long-term limnological monitoring and paleoenvironmental reconstructions, particularly in the Mazurian Lakeland and central Polish lake systems. Her lab work integrates field sediment coring, microscopic varve analysis, geochemical scanning (XRF), and multivariate statistical modeling.
