Gunnar GidionView profile
Researcher
Dr. Gunnar Gidion is a Researcher at the University of Freiburg's Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK), affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering. Since August 2018, he has been part of the Electrical Instrumentation laboratory, focusing on musical acoustics research using advanced sensor technologies. He holds a PhD in Physics (2018) and a Diplom-Physiker degree (2011) from the University of Potsdam, where his doctoral work centered on violin acoustics, piezoelectric-polymer sensors, and dielectric elastomer actuators. His research explores vibrations in musical instruments, particularly bowed string instruments, and investigates player-instrument interaction through thin-film polymer sensors. Beyond academia, he led the jazz choir 'Jazzchor Campus Golm' and translated Leonhard Euler's music theory work from Latin to German. Key projects include BrainLinks–BrainTools, BIOSS, FRIAS, PlanOS, Micro Energy Harvesting, and microTEC Südwest.
