Associate Professor
Dr. Claude Villiers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). He joined FGCU in 2006 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to his current rank in 2011. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida and has prior experience as a research engineer at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and as faculty at The City College of CUNY. His research focuses on infrastructure resilience, sustainable materials in construction, transportation engineering, and STEM education outreach. He has published extensively on topics such as hurricane impacts on infrastructure, recycled materials in asphalt, and driver behavior under adverse conditions. Dr. Villiers actively participates in professional organizations including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He has also contributed editorially to journals like the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. In education, he has pioneered flipped classroom methodologies and developed STEM summer programs for underrepresented high school students. His work emphasizes bridging gaps between theory and practice, particularly through hands-on research experiences for students.
