Janika Päll is a Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, affiliated with the Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures since 2018. She holds a dual role as Project Manager for the Helleno-Nordica initiative at the Tartu University Library (2021–present). Her career includes roles as Senior Research Fellow (2013–2021), Associate Professor (2021), and has maintained academic ties with international institutions like the University of Lausanne and Basel. Education includes a PhD in Classical Philology (2007, Tartu University) under Mihhail Lotman, focusing on Gorgias' rhetoric. Earlier degrees include an MA (2000) and BA in Classical Philology (1995). Her pedagogical contributions span teaching ancient Greek syntax, epic poetry, and renaissance rhetoric since 1995. Research interests center on ancient Greek and Latin literature, rhetorical traditions, and the reception of classical texts in early modern Europe. Projects include studying 16th-century Greek poetry, Humanist Greek in the Baltic region, and neo-humanist intellectual networks. She co-curated major exhibitions on Karl Morgenstern and Renaissance printing at Tartu University Library. Award-winning scholar recognized for translation work (2023 Akadeemia Prize) and contributions to cultural history. Active in academic organizations including the International Society for the History of Rhetoric (ISHR) and the editorial board of Acta Societatis Morgensternianae . Supervised over 15 doctoral and master's theses, notably Kadri Novikov's prize-winning study on Achilles Tatius.
