Assistant Professor
Brian Haney, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Mount Saint Vincent University. His research focuses on urban insect ecology, social insect behavior, and the evolutionary mechanisms driving cooperative behavior in ants. He holds a PhD from Arizona State University and a BS from Trinity University. Research Interests: Dr. Haney investigates how ecological factors influence cooperative behaviors in social insects, particularly focusing on ant queen cooperation and climate change impacts on pollinators. His work bridges behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology, emphasizing the interplay between environmental pressures and social organization. Publications: His recent work includes studies on ant queen cooperation's fitness consequences, heat tolerance in desert ant colonies, and teaching methodologies in biology classrooms. Key themes include understanding how ecological drivers shape cooperative strategies and their reproductive outcomes. Teaching: He teaches courses in general biology, ecology, animal behavior, and research methodologies. Courses include BIOL 112, BIOL 223, BIOL 326, and research supervision. Affiliations: Active member of the Animal Behavior Society, Ecological Society of America, and Sigma Xi. His NYC Pollinator Project explores urban ecology impacts on pollinators.
