Dr. Eric Beyer is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, serving as Vice Chairman for Academic Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics and specializing in the Section of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation. As a physician scientist, Dr. Beyer practices pediatric hematology/oncology while maintaining an active research laboratory focused on intercellular communication through gap junctions. Dr. Beyer received his AB in Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago, followed by a PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology and an MD from UCSD. His clinical training includes an internship and residency in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital, Boston, and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children's Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Center, Boston. Dr. Beyer's research spans nearly three decades, investigating the role of connexins and gap junctions in various physiological processes and disease states. His laboratory has identified and cloned subunit proteins, characterized structure-function relationships, and determined pathways of biosynthesis and degradation. Key research areas include: Connexins in eye lens and cataract formation Cardiac connexins in normal conduction and arrhythmia pathogenesis Extracellular vesicles in vascular pathologies of sickle cell disease Intercellular communication mechanisms in health and disease Analysis of Dr. Beyer's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying cataract formation through connexin mutations, with particular emphasis on biomineralization processes and calcium deposition. His work also demonstrates a significant shift toward translational research on sickle cell disease, particularly examining how circulating extracellular vesicles contribute to vaso-occlusive crises and acute chest syndrome. This dual focus on basic molecular mechanisms and clinical applications represents the hallmark of his translational research approach. Dr. Beyer has received numerous prestigious honors including membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation, Fellowship in the Society for Pediatric Research, and Fellowships from the American Heart Association and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. As a mentor, Dr. Beyer has guided numerous students and post-doctoral fellows through his laboratory. His current research is supported by multiple NIH grants, including R01EY030914 for 'Geobiology of Cataracts' (2020-2024) and KL2TR002387 for 'Institutional Career Development Core' (2017-2027), where he serves as Principal Investigator. His extensive grant history demonstrates continuous funding since 1990, reflecting the significance and impact of his research. Dr. Beyer's laboratory maintains a strong focus on the structural and functional aspects of connexins in multiple organ systems, with particular expertise in lens biology and cardiovascular function.
