Annie Whiles is a Lecturer in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London (part-time since 2003-2023). Her practice interrogates the intersection of mundane and miraculous elements through woodcarvings, drawings, and embroideries that incorporate personal icons transformed into cultural artifacts. She has exhibited extensively across the UK and internationally, including solo shows at Matt's Gallery (2020), Danielle Arnaud Gallery (2018), and group exhibitions at Compton Verney (2008) and Collective Gallery (2008). M.A. Fine Art, Goldsmiths College (2000) B.A. Hons Sculpture, Wimbledon School of Art (1991) Annie's work explores representational languages that create tension between intuitive understanding and contemporary artistic practice. Her sculptural process combines archaeological engagement with materials and surface painting techniques, while her textile works like 'The Moment Ago' (2006) incorporate hair and fabric to examine cultural affiliation. The ongoing 'Doorway Guardians' series (2025) continues her exploration of liminal spaces through woodcarving. Her practice involves a studio-based methodology where objects and images 'lay dormant' until their symbolic potential emerges. This approach manifests in diverse formats including gallery exhibitions, artist's books, and collaborative projects like 'United We Fall' (2008) with Mark Pearson. While no scientific awards are documented, her work has been featured in prestigious platforms including the Royal Academy Summer Show (2018) and China's Metropolis Rise (2006). Annie has taught across multiple UK institutions, including Camberwell School of Art (2008-09), Nottingham Trent University (2000-06), and Hertfordshire University (1998-2004). Her teaching spans BA Fine Art, Sculpture Foundation, and Drawing programmes, reflecting her interdisciplinary expertise in visual arts education.
