Associate Professor
Anise K. Strong is an Associate Professor of History at Western Michigan University specializing in ancient Roman history, gender and sexuality studies, and classical reception. She received the 2016-17 College of Arts and Sciences Gender Scholar Award for her scholarly contributions. Dr. Strong earned her Ph.D. in Classical Studies from Columbia University (2005), M.Phil from Columbia (2003), M.A. from Columbia (2001), and B.A. in Classical Civilization from Yale University (1999). Her teaching portfolio includes courses on Greek and Roman history, world history, gender and sexuality in antiquity, and history through film. Her research examines marginalized groups in antiquity including prostitutes, slaves, and women, and analyzes contemporary representations of classical worlds in media. Current investigations focus on Roman social structures, violence in ancient societies, and neomedievalism in digital culture.
