Amy Papaelias is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at the State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNY New Paltz), where she teaches courses in web design, interaction design, typography, and 2D design. She holds an MFA in Intermedia Design from SUNY New Paltz and a BA in English Cultural Studies from McGill University.
Her research focuses on design practices in scholarly publishing, typography, and the intersections of design with digital humanities. Notable projects include the long-term study of academic journal design (What Scholarship Looks Like) and co-editing the special issue Critical Making: Design and the Digital Humanities for Visible Language. She has also developed Serendip-o-matic, a web-based tool for scholarly discovery.
Amy is actively involved in professional organizations such as the Type Directors Club and Alphabettes, a network she co-founded to promote women’s work in typography. She has received the 2017 Design Incubation Communication Design Educators Award for her research publications.
Her teaching emphasizes design pedagogy, digital literacy, and fostering student engagement with design communities. She advises the Design Society, a student design club, and serves on the board of the New Paltz Central School District Foundation.
