Senior Lecturer
Renae Hovey is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Biological Sciences and UWA Oceans Institute, The University of Western Australia. She specializes in marine benthic ecology, integrating biology, spatial ecology, oceanography, and fisheries science. Her roles include program coordination for Marine Biology and Marine Science degrees, and committee involvement in community outreach and teaching. Educational background: PhD in Marine Ecology from The University of Western Australia (2010). She has extensive field experience in tropical and temperate marine habitats, including coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangroves, with expertise in SCUBA diving, chemical analysis, and GIS modeling. Research focuses on marine community resilience, climate refugia, and microplastic impacts in coastal ecosystems. Current projects explore plastic pollution in estuaries, seagrass dispersal, and the role of macroalgae as fish nurseries. Her work aligns with UN SDGs related to life below water and sustainable cities. Teaching contributions include coordinating multiple undergraduate and postgraduate units, securing industry grants for field trips, and advocating for innovative teaching methods since 2014. Awards include a 2015 TL strategic fund grant for enhancing marine science education. Advising PhD students on topics such as plastics in crustaceans and climate-driven shifts in marine assemblages. Collaborates on grants totaling 34 projects, including seabed mapping initiatives and drone-based surveys. Her work emphasizes cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approaches to marine conservation.
