Thomas Groen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resources at the University of Twente's Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC). He holds a dual appointment at the Digital Society Institute, focusing on interdisciplinary research. His work centers on ecosystem dynamics, remote sensing techniques, and species distribution modelling to inform conservation and management strategies globally. Research interests include: Thermal infrared spectroscopy for vegetation stress detection Satellite time series analysis for early warning of ecosystem tipping points Species distribution modelling applications in conservation Geothermal anomaly detection using ECOSTRESS satellite data Fieldwork spans over 20 countries including Kenya, South Africa, and Indonesia. He has received the SEFI Best Paper Award (2020) and Teacher of the Year (2022). Recent work emphasizes geothermal hotspot detection and tsetse fly habitat modelling, with over 129 publications and 3 major datasets. Teaching focuses on spatial modelling, R programming, and quantitative ecology. Award-winning educator with contributions to SDGs 13 (Climate Action), 15 (Life on Land), and 7 (Affordable Energy). Collaborations include UN agencies and international institutions in geothermal energy and biodiversity monitoring.
