Hennum earned her law degree (cand. jur) in 1991 and completed her dr. philos. degree in 1999, both from the University of Oslo. Her academic career has been primarily focused on criminal law and legal theory, with significant contributions to understanding how legal systems address issues of gender, violence, and human rights. Professor Hennum's research spans the intersection of criminal law/procedure and sociology of law. Her work has made significant contributions to understanding evidence in cases of sexual abuse, sentencing practices, legal aspects of euthanasia, sexual violence, and forced marriages. She has particularly focused on how legal frameworks address gender-based violence and protect vulnerable populations, especially children. Her interdisciplinary approach combines legal analysis with sociological perspectives to examine how laws function in practice. Her extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on improving legal protections for vulnerable groups while maintaining the integrity of criminal justice systems. Hennum's research shows an evolving trajectory from theoretical legal analysis toward practical applications in legal reform and policy development, particularly in areas of gender equality and child protection. Beyond her academic roles, Hennum actively contributes to public discourse and policy formation. She serves on the board of PRIO (Peace Research Institute Oslo) and chairs the national Committee for Gender Balance and Diversity in Research, demonstrating her commitment to advancing equitable practices in both legal systems and academic institutions. As an educator, Hennum teaches criminal law and procedure, shaping the next generation of legal professionals with her expertise in both theoretical and practical aspects of the criminal justice system. Her leadership roles at the University of Oslo reflect her significant standing within Norwegian academia and her commitment to advancing higher education.
