Angelina Palmén is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of History, Uppsala University. She specializes in the intersection between social and cultural history and economic and business history, with a special focus on modern European Jewish history. Her work is affiliated with the historical research and digitisation project Gender and Work (GaW) led by Professor Maria Ågren. Dr. Palmén received her BA, MA, and PhD (2024) from the University of Oxford. Her doctoral dissertation, "Producing New Women: Work, Consumer Culture and Jewish Clothing Companies in Wilhelmine Germany," was shortlisted for the Coleman Prize for Best Dissertation by the Association of Business Historians. Her research interests include gender and women's history, feminism, visual culture, the histories of work and consumption, and digital humanities. Dr. Palmén's current postdoctoral project at Uppsala University examines the activism of Jewish women in Stockholm and Berlin in the early twentieth century through the lenses of intersectionality and social entrepreneurship. This project is funded by the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland and seeks to question conventional androcentric narratives that privilege macro-level, top-down and ethno-nationalist-influenced perspectives on societal modernization. Dr. Palmén's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on Jewish business history, particularly department stores and fashion industries in Imperial Germany, and their relationship to women's movements and feminist ideals. Her work often examines how Jewish commercial enterprises intersected with the promotion of women's rights and new gender norms in early 20th century Europe, with special attention to visual culture and consumer practices. Her notable awards and fellowships include: Leo Baeck fellowship in German-Jewish history from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and Leo Baeck Institute, London (2018–2019) Posen foundation fellowship in Jewish History, Society, and Culture (2018–2020) Dr Sophie Bookhalter research fellowship at the Center for Jewish History, New York (2021–2022) Dr. Palmén has received research funding from the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland for her current postdoctoral project. While there is no specific mention of graduate students she advises, her work with the Gender and Work (GaW) project suggests collaboration with other researchers in the field. She is actively involved in the Gender and Work (GaW) research and digitisation project led by Professor Maria Ågren, which focuses on historical gender dynamics in labor markets. Her research connects with broader scholarly conversations about Jewish contributions to European cultural and economic life, particularly through the lens of women's entrepreneurship and social reform.
