Anna Backman Rogers is a Professor in Aesthetics at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Holding a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, she has previously held positions at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) and Stockholm University (Sweden). Her academic work focuses on feminist theory, film studies, and visual culture, with particular emphasis on female authorship in cinema and documentary practices.
Research Interests: Her scholarship interrogates liminal spaces in film, gendered visual pleasure, and the politics of female representation. She explores intersections between feminist theory, documentary strategies, and contemporary media aesthetics, often through the lens of directors like Sofia Coppola and Laura Mulvey.
Selected Publications & Projects: Notable books include American Independent Cinema: Rites of Passage and The Crisis Image (2015) and Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock (2022). She is co-editor of the Female Authorship and Documentary Strategies series and co-founder/editor-in-chief of the feminist journal MAI: Feminism and Visual Culture. Current projects include a monograph on Lana Del Rey's iconography (2025/6) and edited volumes on Laura Mulvey's feminist legacies and female fashion photographers.
