Ashley Hayward, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health at the University of Winnipeg. Her research focuses on Indigenous health, social determinants of health, reproductive justice, and human rights. She holds a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Manitoba, along with a Master’s and Bachelor’s in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies from the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba. Dr. Hayward’s work emphasizes relational and community-led approaches, collaborating with Indigenous communities to address systemic inequities in healthcare and policy. Her research is funded by The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Key areas include Indigenous doula services, maternal health equity, and decolonizing research methodologies. She teaches KIN 2305 – Issues in Health, integrating her interdisciplinary expertise into academic instruction. Dr. Hayward’s community-based projects prioritize ethical partnerships and systemic change, particularly around Indigenous birthing practices and reproductive justice. She actively contributes to policy development through collaborative research with Indigenous organizations and service providers. Professionally, she balances academic and community roles while maintaining strong familial connections as a Métis mother and wife. Her work reflects a commitment to integrating personal values of kinship and relationality into scholarly and community efforts for health equity.
